stable / settled
The desire to feel stable, settled, secure, or safe often leads us to avoid change. And, to create this illusion of stability, we often create change. After living a relatively stable life, many people settle in St. George, in southwestern Utah, to retire. This place is chosen for it's relatively stable climate and mild winters. As more and more people settle here, the dynamic stability of the ecosystem, and the lives that make it up, is disrupted. While one group settles here, another is unsettled, contributing to the "Great Acceleration" of changes commonly called the Anthropocene.
